Windermere Road flooding
As we are now well into autumn and approaching winter we have experienced yet again extreme weather conditions during the last month.
We had a number of flooding issues in the town with the residents on Windermere Road being badly affected less than 12 months from the last deluge. The County Council is working closely with the Environment Agency, Forestry Commission, SLDC and other partners to identify a long term solution to the issue. Plans are being drawn up to prevent further flooding on Windermere road including the upstream measures to hold back water to prevent the massive flash flooding that has become a regular problem.
I am as frustrated as many residents are about the speed of the implementation of these plans and will be pressing all organisations to pursue these as soon as possible.
Please Beware Of Hoax HMRC Calls
Cumbria Trading Standards are warning residents in South Lakeland to be on their guard after several residents reported getting hoax calls from Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC).
The call (which is usually left as an answerphone message), warns householders they will be sued by HMRC unless they contact a specific number and hand over a large sum of money. This scam is becoming widely reported and seems to be targeting older people.
Trading Standards advice is: If you cannot verify the identity of the person making the call you should not disclose your personal details.
Consumers should be extremely cautious when contacted by any cold callers. They can often use persuasive or aggressive tactics to get you to hand over money. Trading Standards advice is to ignore any cold callers demanding money.
Please also be aware HMRC will not e-mail you but will always write to you by post.
For advice on such issues or to report an incident call the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline on 03454 04 05 06 or visit www.adviceguide.org.uk or you can contact the Police on 101.
