South Lakes councillor Tom Harvey has accused Tim Farron of rank hypocrisy over his claims that unitary government for Cumbria would move decision-making further away from South Lakeland.
Councillor Harvey has pointed to the Westmorland and Lonsdale MPs’ ongoing efforts to overturn the result of the 2016 EU referendum and keep decision-making over our borders, money and laws in Brussels.
Councillor Tom Harvey said: “We know from his embarrassing public comments before and after the last General Election that Tim Farron will literally say anything for short-term political gain but this latest intervention takes the biscuit.
“Claiming that long-overdue reform of local government in Cumbria will take decision-making further away from South Lakeland while at the same time doing everything in his power to block Brexit and keep control over our border, money and laws in Brussels is rank hypocrisy of the highest order.
“He will literally say anything to bag a few headlines and its high time his votes and actions in Parliament on behalf of the people of Westmorland and Lonsdale were seriously scrutinised beyond the carefully edited highlights that he tailors for local consumption.
“In setting his stall against reform of our local councils he is also turning his back on millions of pounds in extra investment for South Lakeland’s public services.”
