Conservative Leader welcomes Secretary of State to South Lakeland
Cumbria County Council Group Leader Cllr James Airey welcomed Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government Greg Clark MP to South Lakeland today. The Minister visited the Lyth Valley to see for himself the damage caused by the December floods and to witness the recovery progress. Whilst in Levens Greg Clark MP met with farmers and residents who had experienced some of the worst flooding, together they discussed resilience plans for the future. The Minister went on to visit businesses affected by the floods in Kendal Town Centre.
Commenting after the visit James Airey said: “ It was useful to show the Secretary of State first-hand the massive impact the floods have had on our area. It was also great for Greg Clark to see just how hard our communities have worked to get themselves back to somewhere near normality after Decembers devastation. Recovery is well under way thanks to the hard work of residents together with financial support from Government, we can all say that South Lakes is well and truly open for business”
Greg Clark added “ South Lakeland is a beautiful place to visit but what makes it so special are the people, their community spirit is second to none. I met many residents and business owners today who shared their own terrible experiences of the impact of flooding in South Lakes, yet they are very upbeat about the future and have worked tirelessly to make sure that the flood recovery happens quickly for everyone affected”
