Matty Jackman, the Conservative parliamentary candidate for Westmorland and Lonsdale, appeared on BBC Politics North to discuss the impact of Reform UK in Cumbria and the North of England and the crucial role of tourism in the region.
During the interview, Matty emphasised that Reform UK has not been a prominent topic among voters in Westmorland and Lonsdale. Instead, he underscored the significance of the upcoming election, presenting voters with the clear choice of electing him or potentially facing a Keir Starmer-led Labour government.
Jackman urged voters to carefully consider the implications of their decision as the 2024 election approaches.
He argued that voting for him aligns with the current plan in action under Rishi Sunak and the Conservatives, promising a brighter future for constituents, and their families, and a renewed sense of national pride.
In contrast, Jackman cautioned against reverting to square one with Keir Starmer and Labour, highlighting their lack of a coherent future strategy.
As the election draws nearer, Jackman's message is clear: voters must choose between Conservative progress and prosperity or risk uncertainty and stagnation under Labour.
Furthermore, Matty discussed Conservative success in tackling small boat crossings, reporting a significant decrease of over a third. He outlined additional measures, including new treaties and emergency legislation, aimed at deterring illegal migration and ensuring border security.
During the interview, it became evident that the candidates from the Liberal Democrats and Labour lacked concrete plans to address immigration issues. Their rhetoric was filled with empty promises and lacked substance when it came to proposing effective strategies. Matty observed that while they were vocal about the issue, they failed to present actionable plans or solutions.
Regarding tourism, Matty praised the Conservative government for creating favourable conditions for success. However, he noted that local planning authorities need to be more responsive to these conditions.
Matty emphasised that the Conservative Party has a unique understanding of and commitment to maintaining a delicate balance between the economy, community, and environment. He pointed to the party's proven track record of enacting policies that prioritise economic growth while also protecting the welfare of local communities and preserving the environment.
Matty stressed the significance of achieving harmony among these three aspects to promote sustainable development and ensure the prosperity and welfare of current and future generations.
Matty encouraged everyone to book their Lake District holidays now, highlighting the region's potential for sustained growth in the visitor economy under Conservative leadership.
