Conservatives are celebrating their success in this year’s South Lakeland District Council elections – taking four seats from the Liberal Democrats.
Councillor Ben Berry, the Conservative Group leader, said: "We're absolutely delighted to have made gains in these elections and profoundly grateful to the people of South Lakeland. Local voters have come out in great strength to support us. We will be using our strengthened position on the council to continue to hold the Liberal Democrat administration to account on behalf of people across the district.”
The Liberal Democrats remain in control of the council but have slipped to their lowest number of councillors in more than a decade.
The Conservative success follows last year’s General Election which saw the Conservative’s Parliamentary candidate, James Airey, slash the sitting Liberal Democrat MPs’ majority from 8,949 to 777 (seven hundred and seventy-seven).
