Councillor James Airey, Conservative Group Leader on Cumbria County Council, has welcomed today’s Government announcement of a £2.5 billion investment in Barrow’s nuclear submarine programme. The announcement today will secure 8,000 jobs in BAE Systems’ submarine business, as well as thousands more in the supply chain.
The investment includes £1.5 billion for the Royal Navy’s seventh Astute class submarine, and another £960 million for second phase of construction for four nuclear-armed Dreadnought submarines.
Councillor Airey, said: “This investment in South Cumbrian jobs is welcome news and underlines the Government’s commitment to keeping our nation safe and secure.”
