A campaign is being launched today (23 July) to encourage Cumbria’s Liberal Democrat and Labour-led county council to step-up work to clear blocked drains and carry out other essential work to reduce flood risks in south Cumbria this year.
South Lakes councillor Tom Harvey is asking people across the District to get involved in the Clear the Drains Before it Rains campaign by submitting details of blocked drains in their community via an online form: https://www.westmorlandconservatives.org.uk/form/clear-the-drains-before-it-rains
The feedback will be used to put pressure on the council to clear blocked drains, and repair broken culverts and gulleys before the autumn and winter.
Councillor Tom Harvey said: ““This campaign is incredibly important to protecting homes and businesses from flooding. For far too long the county council has been reactive instead of pro-active and while it's easy to think this summer will last forever, we know all too well that prolonged periods of rain will be coming at some point. Putting the work in now can only protect and benefit our residents in the future.
“The Clear the Drains Before it Rains campaign aims to coordinate efforts to force Cumbria County Council into clearing drains that have been identified as blocked and to repair broken gulleys and culverts.”
