South Lakeland District Council is being urged to use an unexpected £167,000 parking windfall to provide free weekend parking during December in the run-up to Christmas.
The call is being made by councillor Tom Harvey, the deputy leader of the local authority’s Conservative group, who wants the council to use the parking fees surplus to provide free weekend parking and help boost high streets in towns and villages this Christmas.
Councillor Tom Harvey said: “This is extra money from car parking fees which the council did not expect to receive when it set its budget at the start of the year.
“Using this windfall to provide free weekend parking in the run-up to Christmas across South Lakeland would help to support our high streets and shoppers at one of busiest times of the year.”
