South Lakes councillor Tom Harvey has welcomed £12 million to improve the condition of roads in Cumbria.
The Chancellor, Philip Hammond, announced at the Budget that a £420 million fund will be created to tackle potholes and other roadworks. Cumbria County Council will receive £12 million to repair potholes and help with other highways works that may be needed.
The Budget also announced the biggest ever single cash injection to improve England’s roads, meaning that people can get to and from home and work quicker, boosting the local economy and improving air quality.
Commenting, councillor Tom Harvey who represents South Lakeland’s Burton and Crooklands Ward, said: “I am delighted that Cumbria County Council will be receiving this funding boost to improve roads, helping hardworking people in South Lakeland.
“This additional new funding represents a significant boost in road maintenance and is on top of £950 million the Government is already providing to councils across the country this year for local highways maintenance.
“It’s now up to the county council to use this money speedily to carry out the repairs it is intended for and not sit on the cash, as it was revealed to have done with £2.9 million of winter roads funding it received earlier this year.”
